Vacancy: Two EVS volunteers for the project 'CATAPEDIA 2.0'

CATAPA - Comité Académico Técnico de Asesoramiento a Problemas Ambientales, literally Technical Academic Committee for Assistance in Environmental Issues - is a volunteer organisation in Belgium. We are active in the fields of globalization and sustainable development in Latin America and focus on the problems caused by modern open pit mining (ecological disasters, human rights violations, etc.). We support local communities threatened by multinational mining corporations. The mining industry's impact on the social, economic, cultural and ecological level is often disastrous and fundamentally unjust. We aim to alter these structural causes of poverty and exclusion by forming a resolute front with the social middle field in the North and South. We have partner organizations in three Latin American countries (Bolivia, Peru and Guatemala).

CATAPA was founded in 2005. We are about 100 young volunteers and over 1000 sympathizers strong. We offer a specific, action bound commitment for anyone who believes that another world is possible. By raising awareness, networking, research, lobbying and exchange we intend to make the mining industry as well as the consumption of metals more just for man and environment.

We are looking for 2 EVS volunteers

From January 2015 to December 2016, we are looking for 2 European volunteers who want to work on the project CATAPEDIA 2.0 in the framework of CATAPA’s new campaign ‘Generation Transition’, which started in September 2014. This aim of this campaign is to offer the new generation or 'Generation Transition' (managers, leaders, politicians, CEO’s, teachers etc.) skills and tools on sustainable development, in order to make the transition towards a society that uses resources in a sustainable manner. The campaign is an initiative of CATAPA, Mediaraven, Act4Change and Putumayo, and will last till September 2017.

The first year of the campaign will be focused on the preparation and development of the educational tools for 'Generation Transition'. Because CATAPA focuses on issues related to globalization and sustainable development, we have a lot of information and expertise. But, it is not yet made easily accessible and retrievable. The project CATAPEDIA 2.0 will therefore focus on the first part of the campaign: collecting and organizing all available information on sustainability and the exploitation and depletion of resources.

For 'CATAPEDIA 2.0' we are looking for one volunteer who will mainly be responsible for communication. Tasks consists of:

  • writing articles
  • managing the (digital)library
  • following-up social media and the website
  • making powerpoints and prezi presentations
  • gathering relevant information on sustainable use of resources for CATAPA's website and digital library.

The other volunteer will mainly be responsible for the educational part of the project. Tasks consist of:

  • organizing events
  • editing short videos on the subject of sustainable use of resources
  • offering guidance to students
  • welcoming new volunteers
  • organizing information meetings and masterclasses.

Tasks of both volunteers can coincide and overlap and both volunteers will collaborate intensively.

The volunteers will start in the beginning of January 2015 (exact date will be determined later).

The EVS volunteers will be offered a monthly fee of 636 euro.

None, everybody who is open minded and has the desire and flexibility to work within a dynamic team of volunteers can work with CATAPA. What we further expect from the volunteer:

  • Interest and/or experience with environmental movement add value.
  • Spanish/English/Dutch speaking add value.
  • Independent, proactive worker.
  • Background knowledge of mining related problems is also a benefit but not required.
  • Be familiar with social media/editing/organizing events.
  • Age below 31 year.

This call is part of the ‘Youth in Action’ program, action 'european Volunteerswork in the European Commission.  ( This means that expenses of the volunteers (accommodation, food, transport and languages courses), will be paid.
