In the middle of the unease and controversy generated by the violent incursion yesterday by the security forces of the mining company Yanacocha in the land occupied by the Chaupe family, which the company claims to be its property, the Judiciary of Cajamarca emitted the following communiqué:

On October 25th 2014, urban, rural, peasant and indigenous community members, leaders, activists and authorities from different parts of Peru gathered in Celendín, Cajamarca region, and agreed upon a powerful pronouncement with important claims and announcements the Peruvian state and the international community, and particularly to the COP20 Climate Summit and the alternative People's Summit in Lima.

Yanacocha, Conga, Cerro Quilish: a small update on manifold problems

In Cajamarca province in Peru plans to open new mines are constantly under development, and local people, environmentalists and human rights activists are in a continuous struggle. Until now local communities could book several stage wins in their struggle to protect Cerro Quilish. They have been fighting for years to prevent the mountain turning into a polluting pit as they witnessed with Yanacocha mine, situated just about 5 km North-East of Cerro Quilish. The mountain is part of the cultural identity of the inhabitants and of spiritual importance to them.
